Mudvayne’s “-1” derives itself from a divide between a grandiose sense of helplessness and a shattered innocence. Following the theme on the album, the experience of life’s suffering is irately questioned through a lens of religion and philosophy. The song can be interpreted as a representation of the pursuit of “enlightenment” (the one) and the resulting rage brought out by scars of neglect and habitual drug use. Conclusively, vocalist Chad Gray is bitterly conveying an experience of self-actualization.
