Off the 2004 album The Libertines , ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ is a short but powerful reflection on the hypocrisy and flaws of human society. The song opens with WWII and the persecution of the Jewish at the hands of the Nazis, and finishes in the post WWII era where despite the millions of lives lost to prejudice, we still have not learnt the devastating effects unjustified racism can have.

A credit to Pete Doherty, ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ is arguably one of the wittiest and thought-provoking songs to come out of the noughties.
