When You Were Mine

When You Were Mine

Prince

“When You Were Mine” is a new wave song written and performed by Prince. The song–a jittery rock track about a tortured love triangle– was never officially released as a commercial single, but gained renewed interest when Cyndi Lauper covered it three years later on her blockbuster debut She’s So Unusual. (On the cover version, Lauper slowed the tempo down and amped the sexual ambiguity of the song by refusing to change pronouns.)
