Biggie Got the Hype Shit

Biggie Got the Hype Shit

The Notorious B.I.G.

As described in the book Unbelievable

After signing Big to Uptown Records, Sean “Puffy” Combs wanted to monitor his new artist’s poise in the studio, thus the session for “Biggei Got The Hype Shit.” It starts with a snatch of movie dialog asking “Who is Biggie Smalls?” (taken from the Blaxploitation-era comedy Let’s Do It Again), before kicking into the Jesse West and DJ Mister Cee co-produced track, based around the kinetic, bass-driven (and oft-sampled) bridge from James Brown’s funk bomb “I Got to Move.” It’s hard to imagine Puff not being pleased with his protege’s performance. Biggie’s intense, high-pitched delivery robustly commands the track. And, as they will remain through his career, his lyrics are a supreme blend of the coarse and the clever: “Biggie Smalls got bitches in Brazil / Use a rubber if that bitch ain’t on the pill… I’m not the type to toot my own horn / But toot toot.” One of the voices on the chorus is that of Big’s friend O, who later passed away and was paid a tribute on “Missing You.” Unfortunately, the master reels for “Biggie Got The Hype Shit” were destroyed in a fire at the Bronx studio where the song was recorded, dashing chances of any official release.
