Bridgit revealed at a countdown on her Instagram a few facts about the song. About the song she said:

I was working with Book, one of my producers, one day at his studio in Los Angeles. He started this beat that sounded like it was underwater. I imagined fish swimming through a deserted underwater city.

Bridgit wrote the lyrics based on how numb she was feeling after a heartbreak, as she said:

Atlantis is a beautiful city that disappeared and was forgotten underwater. That is what it feels like to me to lose a first love.

About collaborating with the rapper Kaiydo, Bridgit said that she found him at her favorite music blog, looking for new artists,

He is a talented fresh voice and he responded to the track so I thought he would be perfect for a feature. […] His lyrics match the tone of this story perfectly.

“Atlantis” is the lead single of her comeback to the music industry and it’s a part of her first EP, “Nemesis”, set to be released in November. The song was planned to be released officially on August 18, 2016, but leaked a day early.

Due to the leak, Bridgit asked her fans to trend the hashtag #Atlantis on Twitter, promising if they did, she would release the song one day earlier. The single premiered on Pigeons and Planes on August 25 with the upload of Atlantis at Bridgit’s Soundcloud.
