Agust D

“Agust D” is the title track for Agust D’s self titled mixtape. The track features intense rap over an old-school-hip-hop-influenced beat, and it samples James Brown’s 1966 hit “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World”.

The lyrics are made up of eye-opening remarks concerning the constraints of being a K-pop star with lines like:

This K-pop category ain’t enough size for me.

The lyrics also offer an unexpected take on why the industry should be glad Yoongi’s in the Korean music industry. The perceived weakness that most K-pop idols can’t be legitimate MCs becomes a strength. The rap scene is actually lucky Agust D is just an alter ego or it’d be game over. Yoongi also drops bold catchphrases like “Ya’ll get turned on by ma tongue technology” that one typically wouldn’t find in a K-pop song.

When asked in an interview with Marie Claire Yoongi describes the direction he wanted to focus on with his music:

I wanted to express myself transparently with the purpose of doing everything I wanted to do.”
