“40 Acres” is the fifth track from T.I.’s 2016 EP, Us or Else. The song is a revamped version of the Hustle Gang song that was released this summer. Similarly to the rest of the EP, the song deals with issues such as slavery, economic inequality, and racial discrimination in the United States, themes that are present in other songs off the EP including Blackman and Warzone among others.

The title of the song is a reference to a historical land reform policy for newly freed slaves following the American Civil War. Widespread roclamations such as Sherman’s Special Field Orders No. 15 led many former slaves to believe that they would receive 40 acres of tillable land and a mule. The promise went largely unfilled, and continues to be used as a symbol of the unpaid reparations due to African Americans.
