“Girl Can’t Be Herself” is an anthem for Alicia’s makeup-free movement, and alludes to the expectations of women in the media and in society.

Alicia launched her #NoMakeup campaign in 2016, which she first brought to everyone’s attention after she penned an open letter in Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter in May 2016. She explained that her stand against using makeup was supposed to inspire people to love each other for what’s on the inside rather than on the outside:

It would be so amazing to just embrace each other how we are. I think the most important thing is you do what feels good for you.
