“Wake Up” is Chelsea Cutler’s sophomore single that jump-started her career. The song is about wanting to wake up, enjoy every day, and live life to the fullest. The song at first might lean toward a relationship theme, but is instead used metaphorically to portray the actual theme.

The theme connecting to life was later confirmed by Chelsea through an interview with Sound Digest:

I just wanted to pour happiness into the song. I wrote ‘Wake Up’ about how it’s so important to take each day as it is and to not be afraid to live life to the fullest, as cliché as it sounds. Writing the song gave me a sense of comfort, as if suddenly everything was going to be okay, and I really wanted listeners to feel that same comfort.

In a separate interview with The DJ List, she stated how she didn’t expect her sophomore single to create such of an impact on her career as it did:

Wow, I don’t even really know… I wasn’t planning on reaching out to any labels or working exclusively with one. But Ultra found “Wake Up” on Soundcloud, I think. I never thought a label as successful as Ultra would be in my future, so I was so ecstatic when they reached out. I’m definitely excited for my future with Ultra. In the short time I’ve been with the label, I’ve already felt so much support from the team there.

Remixes for “Wake Up,” created by Cuebrick and Sondr, were released three months after the song’s official release. Shortly following was the official music video released November 1, 2016.
