On October 30th, 2002, hip-hop lost one of its founding fathers, when Jay was shot and killed at his 24/7 Studio in Queens, New York.

He was the head of JMJ Records (division of Def Jam) and discovered such Queens artists as 50 Cent, Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz to the world.

Through this label Onyx released their three classic albums: Bacdafucup (1993), All We Got Iz Us (1995) and Shut ‘Em Down (1998).
