34 Ghosts IV

Nine Inch Nails

“34 Ghosts IV” is an instrumental track by the American experimental rock project Nine Inch Nails, included in the Ghosts I-IV compilation, released on March 2, 2008 under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United States license.

The song was notably nominated for “Best Rock Instrumental Performance” at the 2008 Grammy Awards, thus becoming the first permissively-licensed song to achieve this honour in the process.

Moreover, the fully-instrumental track faced an unexpected resurgence in 2019, as a type beat by the Dutch producer YoungKio that sampled “34 Ghosts IV” was bought by the Atlanta-based artist Lil Nas X in order to create the single “Old Town Road,” which subsequently became a smash hit of that year and reached the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
