Bob Marley died on 11 May 1981 at the age of 36 due to a type of malignant melanoma.
He received a state funeral in Jamaica on 21 May 1981, which combined elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari tradition. The main ceremony was held in Kingston at the National Arena and he was later buried at Nine Mile, a village where he was born. The Jamaican national budget was postponed for a week to accommodate Marley’s state funeral. The prime minister, Edward Seaga, read out the eulogy.
