A Report to the Shareholders / Kill Your Masters

A Report to the Shareholders / Kill Your Masters

Run The Jewels (Ft. Zack de la Rocha)

“A Report to the Shareholders/Kill Your Masters” continues the powerful messages from the first RTJ track that Zack de la Rocha was featured on: “Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)”.

Killer Mike and El-P trade off verses and de la Rocha, popularly known for being the lead vocalist for the rap metal band Rage Against the Machine in the 90’s, makes a surprise guest appearance. The song could easily be seen as a sequel to “Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)”, as both songs vilify society.

The track is split up into two parts: “Report to the Shareholders” and “Kill Your Masters”. A seemingly strong transition between obeying and overthrowing. RTJ’s way of sticking it to society is to create amazing bombastic music in order to become “millionaires.” Killer Mike sees people around him repeating their same slave-like daily routines when they could easily rebel and “kill their masters.” But, as Killer Mike notes, a “Garvey-mind, Tyson-punch… is bad news”. This rap duo is ready to kill their masters through the power of music.

“A Report to the Shareholders” is also probably a reference to “Report to the Stockholders: Poems by John Beecher” from which El-P sampled “The Face You Have Seen” on the “Intro” of his weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamix!!! (2003).
