The song was released early by the band in a tweet the day following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 US Presidential Election:

According to Nick, this was the idea of Kevin Parker, who produced the song; Joe added that “the poor label got an awful shock, they sent us an email saying ‘please don’t drop any more’”. Jay clarified that the song “wasn’t really about him [Trump] or America or anything, it’s more of a universal, like, there was another twenty times last year—or was it this year?—that it would’ve been appropriate.”
