“Sound” is the first song on Sylvan Esso’s sophomore album, What Now.

This song, along with the rest of the album, was released a week prior to to the album’s official release through a campaign in which records were hidden around the world, each with one of the songs on it. As the records were found, the songs were put up to stream on Sylvan Esso’s website.

“Sound” provides an opening to the album through an emotional repetition of a single verse. Amelia sings about wanting to write a song for someone and singing loud enough that everything around them just becomes sound. This is then exemplified through the music in the song: it starts as the sound of static; as the vocals grow louder, this sound fades away.
