All This Time

Jonathan Coulton

“Story begins. We’re hundreds of years into the future. Future Guy is living in a walled city controlled by the machines. Outside is an unknown wasteland that nobody has seen for a long time. Everything is ordered and controlled and safe. The machines are our stewards, doing what they believe is the right thing to keep us alive and content. But Future Guy has some doubts. He starts to get tired of the never-ending sameness of his life, and he thinks about what might be outside the wall. Even though he’s not supposed to, he begins to fantasize about things going wrong, catastrophe and chaos as a kind of freedom. He stops taking his pills, he starts to dream again. Sabotage, escape, he’s outside the wall. He finds a time capsule and here is what is in it:”
