In 2006, Stephin Merritt moved to Los Angeles to attempt a career as a film composer. He lived in Silver Lake, long one of the centers of gay life in the city (the Mattachine Society was founded there) and in recent decades a bohemian (now largely bourgeois-bohemian) mecca.
