MC Lyte

Here’s the timeline:

  • Antoinette recorded “I Got an Attitude”, which had a broadly similar beat to “Top Billin'” the breakout hit of the group Audio Two.
  • Audio Two didn’t want to diss a female MC, so they had their affiliate, MC Lyte, do it: this song was the result.
  • A full-fledged beef formed between Antoinette and Lyte, lasting a bunch of noticeable songs.

In Check the Technique, Lyte notes:

We went into INS [Studios] two days later and [made this track]. It was pretty easy—we just sat there and thought of the worst things we cuold possibly say about somebody [laughs]. It’s titled that because that’s only ten percent of what I could have said. I didn’t even know Antoinette. It was strictly a war on wax. She tried to dis me back but the hype on me was so big that no one cared if she had a rebuttal to it. I think she was from Queens. We actually had a battle once at the World. I won. Even then, it was understood completely that it was just business.
