Final Confluence

Final Confluence

Austin Wintory

“Final Confluence” is the backing track for the last “vision” the player has and the penultimate cutscene for the game. While the confluence tracks before the final are more ambient with only sprinklings of melodies throughout, this track is instead a build-up to a strong and prominent reprise of the game’s theme. This is perhaps due to the fact that this confluence tells the story of the player and their journey rather than the vague tales of time since past. The player truly feels present in this scene, as evidenced by both the melody and the Traveler actually being in frame watching the story unfold.

While “Final Confluence” is one of the shortest songs on the game’s soundtrack, the triumphant melody combine with the emotional context of the song has made the song one of the most memorable, as evidenced by it being included as one of the few tracks given an official piano cover on the Journey: Transfiguration album. Austin Wintory noted in his YouTube commentary that:

As many thousands of times I’ve played the game, and know all of its secrets, I am still always deeply moved by this series of images…

But it is not just the cutscene itself that leads to the impact of this scene, but rather the pairing of the melody and series of images working together as an emotional reflection of the game as a whole, that leads to the final confluence having such an impact.
The song does end on an uneasy note, however, as the cutscene ends with a lingering shot on the mountain. While the player has overcome a lot, the journey is not over yet- and the ending of the song hints at the next leg of the journey being the most threatening yet.
