Shell is a petrol company common in Australia, and a Shell petrol station is located down the street from King Gizzard’s recording studio, Flightless Records. Both are located on Lygon Street, which is referenced in the song ‘Dusk to Dawn on Lygon Street’.

The title is literally about going down to the servo, but may also be a commentary on the inhumane actions of the Shell company, likening it to Hell. For instance, between 1976 and 1991, Shell’s operations in Nigeria resulted in 2976 oil spills, culminating in over 2 million barrels spilling directly into the environment. In 1990, a peaceful protest was staged regarding this and other Shell actions. In response, Shell ordered the Nigerian Mobile Police to intercept, killing 80 people and destroying almost 500 homes. Later, following more protests and political disputes, Shell-related military attacks took the lives of over 1000 people and left a further 30,000 homeless.
