Sassy

Sassy

Rapsody

This song draws inspiration and imagery from Maya Angelou’s famous poem, “Still I Rise,” specifically the line, “Does my sassiness upset you?” In doing so, Rapsody builds upon Angelou’s message of strength and perseverance as a path to success.

It also builds upon similar themes seen elsewhere on this album, like in “Black and Ugly,” which starts out with

I remember when y'all used to call me ugly
Isnt it ironic know you all just wanna love me

The song was also nominated for Best Rap Song at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
