Murder on My Mind

YNW Melly

“Murder on My Mind” is YNW Melly’s breakout song. It depicts a dark, upsetting story of Melly shooting a close friend and holding him in his arms as he slowly lost consciousness and died. Melly also mentions his previous jail time served for gun charges and drug possession. The shooting he refers to in this song happened in 2016 or earlier.

In an interview with HotNewHipHop, Melly described how he had written this after being charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of discharging a firearm in public and had been locked up for a year. In the interview he said how all 240 inmates and the staff enjoyed his song and that’s how he knew it’d be a hit.

Following the release of the track on Soundcloud in 2017, the track’s lyrics supposedly violated Melly’s probation for his prior charge; sending him back to prison.

Over a year after the release of the audio, Melly released the official music video directed by the popular director Gabriel Hart. The video gave a demonic and creepy vibe while vividly showing the fictional crime scene Melly describes.

A month after the release of the video, the song started gaining traction hence Melly released “Mischief on My Mind”, a clean, radio-edited version of “Murder on My Mind”.

“Murder on My Mind” was soon followed up by a sequel, “Mind on My Murder,” which depicts the same events of this song from the victim’s perspective. It is subsequent to the album’s tracklisting.
