“Asking for a Friend” is a single that Dawson had released on his debut studio album Dark Horse. “Asking for a friend” is a popular thing people say when they ask a question where the answer may seem obvious, and they don’t want anyone to know they they indeed are asking and not really a “friend”. In this song, Devin uses that logic by begging his ex to take him back, ignoring all the wrongs he has done to her. While writing the song, Devin said that is is indeed autobiographic saying,

It was one of those songs that was definitely rooted in my story…I was going through a relationship where I probably could have used this song, you know, and I needed to say ‘sorry’ to someone. I think we had already ended things a couple weeks earlier.

In the video for the song, Dawson plays 5 different alter egos of himself, all trying to talk to his ex and win her back. The video ends prior to the audience learning the end of whether or not she takes him back.
