“Spotlight” is a bittersweet farewell to a pioneer of the emo-rap sub-genre. Beginning with a soft guitar riff and leading into dark pulsating synths behind Lil Peep’s brooding vocals, “Spotlight” follows the singer’s turmoil as he struggles to cope with a recent breakup.

The song is Lil Peep’s first posthumous release; he died on November 15, 2017. After Peep’s death, Marshmello tweeted his condolences and shared that he and Peep had been planning to work on “Spotlight.”

An apparent demo of the song, produced by Smokeasac and Lars Stalfors, had circulated the past few month by a small group in the leak community before eventually being leaked to the public on July 17th, 2019.
