During The Current’s the making of ‘Chime’ event, Dessa explained the beat, most noticeable when it stands alone in the first ten seconds of the song:

This beat came about in an unusual way because we had most of the record in the bag at this point…we had some slow ones and then we had some bangers, but I wanted one more aggressive song. Something that I could use to maneuver between those two extremes, I needed some mid-tempo stuff. So I put a call out on Twitter in an effort to solicit submissions from strangers. And we got this beat called ‘Sour Grapes.’ So I’m sure that there is a story behind it, but we don’t know it because I’ve never met this dude (shoutout to Chance Lewis). And so he submitted this beat and it had a chorus already on it…‘I’m gonna burn this down’ or something like that. But listening to the beat, there was some elements I really liked…I really liked that sample that looped.
