“Dancing” is the opening track on Australian singer Kylie Minogue’s 14th studio album, Golden. The track was released on January 19 as the project’s anticipated lead single.

Her first release since signing to BMG in February 2017, it is an upbeat guitar-led track that signifies another sonic change for Minogue. Lyrically, the song appears to speak of her desire to never stop dancing, but it is also a defiance of ageism and mortality. The song’s chorus (“when I go out, I wanna go out dancing”) symbolises her wish to continue performing quite literally to the death, while the pre-chorus (“can’t stand still / won’t slow down”) addresses her mortality and critics who believe she no longer has a place in the music industry.

Notably, the song has many parallels to her 2000 comeback single, “Spinning Around”: it is her first release since signing to a new label (Parlophone for “Spinning” and BMG for this single), it introduces a new sound for Minogue (disco for the album Light Years and country-tinged pop for Golden) and the lyrics are a celebration of both the past and future.
