The fifth track of Beck’s 12th studio album, Morning Phase. This track was released before the album as its first single.
Aside from guitar, it has a noticeable mandolin, adding a little variety. Though depressing during the verses, the bridges get pretty upbeat for a nice chiaroscuro effect.
This track was inspired by Elvis Presley, after Beck read Peter Guralnick’s two-volume Elvis biography Last Train to Memphis & Careless Love. As he explained: “I’d had it on my shelf for like 15 years, and I finally read it about a couple years ago. I feel like every musician, when they’re starting out, should just read that book.”
