“Goin' Viral” was written in the early stages of creating the show Dear Evan Hansen and was cut from the show before it went to the Arena Stage in DC. The song would have taken place after Evan Hansen has his letter stolen by Connor Murphy. Evan tells Jared Kleinman, a classmate and family friend of Evan’s, about the incident, and Jared tells Evan that Connor will ruin his life with it. Jared then proceeds to speculate on what might happen if the letter goes viral. The song was ultimately cut for several reasons: the song required an ensemble which was also cut before the show premiered in DC, the song did nothing to advance the plot of the show that the 30-second scene that made the final show couldn’t do, and the process of how something goes viral is better depicted by the song “You Will Be Found” at the end of the first act.

The song was first performed publicly by Will Roland, who plays Jared in the Broadway production, at 54 Below on February 19, 2018 during an event honoring the history of the Music Box Theatre, which is where Dear Evan Hansen had its Broadway debut.
