Considered by many to be the greatest piece of classical music written for this instrument, the trombone concerto was written for a military band to accompany, the composer having had a long career as an officer in the Imperial Russian Navy. The work debuted in St. Petersburg in March 1878. It is divided into three movements:

  1. Allegro vivace
  2. Andante cantabile
  3. Allegro – allegretto
