Get The Fuck Off My Dick

Get The Fuck Off My Dick

Vince Staples

In a spectacular move, this single was released a day after Vince Staples set up a GoFundMe campaign called #GTFOMD in response to criticism on his music and his stage shows. He claimed to retire early (“you’ll never hear from me again. no songs, no interviews”) if $2 million would be raised – if not, he could do whatever he wanted. On the campaign video, he stated:

Get off my dick or fund my lifestyle

On this song, he details the backlash from critics, music journalists, awards and haters. He boldly claims pride for his work:

Hard to tell which one more perfect, man, my art or my bitch

After his Prima Donna EP in 2016 and the 2017 album Big Fish Theory where he left the more trap-oriented sound from his earlier projects, he faced criticism concerning his electronic (and more experimental) production. However, on this song, the instrumental is a hard-hitting, sparse and rather conventional trap beat.

The #GTFOMD campaign featured a promotional video and a set of written terms which Vince would agree to:

For 2M I agree to do the following:
- Move to Palmdale
- Buy a Honda
- Year supply of soups for the homies locked down
- Buy a puppy

At the release of this song, the campaign had raised around $1000, which made Vince mock his haters on Twitter:

Vince has always dealt with criticism in a very direct way and doesn’t shy away from battling haters on Twitter. He’s also known for his sharp comments – whether it be about old-school hip hop, other rappers' freestyles or homophobia. Vince is one of the most outspoken rappers of his time. On a Pitchfork podcast, he stated to be more famous for his interviews than for his music.
