(Fuck A) Silver Lining

Panic! at the Disco

“(Fuck A) Silver Lining” is a song about wanting to excel at everything and wanting to get the best out of every possible situation. The song centers around the common phrases: “Every cloud has a silver lining” and “cherry on top.” The former means that every difficulty or setback that causes harm also contains the potential to be positive, while the latter refers to something good that follows a series of other fortunate events. Brendon flips these idioms on their head, endless cherries and a silver lining just aren’t enticing to him.

When asked about “(Fuck A) Silver Lining” on the Zach Sang Show, Urie explained his views behind the sentiment.

Essentially the message of that song is ‘nothing’s ever good enough; don’t let anything be good enough.’ ‘Cause everybody is like … 'look on the bright side’. [This song is me saying] ‘no, no, no, no. I want it to be better. We can make it better.’

It was one of the two singles dropped to announce Panic’s sixth album Pray for the Wicked; the other single being “Say Amen (Saturday Night).”

This song was first alluded to during Brendon’s live stream on February 21, 2018, when he described a song as “sound[ing] like you could be in a 70s roller rink, and the word fuck is in every chorus about every line or so.”
