The closing song off the 1916 album by Motörhead. Entirely written and composed by the group’s frontman – Lemmy Kilmister. The song was inspired by the Battle of Somme which took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 during World War I.

Lemmy said of the song:

It’s about the Battle of the Somme in World War I… Nineteen thousand Englishmen were killed before noon, a whole generation destroyed, in three hours – think about that! It was terrible – there were three or four towns in northern Lancashire and south Yorkshire where that whole generation of men were completely wiped out.

Musically, the song is much more somber and melancholic than one may expect from a band like Motörhead, who were always better known for fast-paced heavy metal anthems such as “Ace of Spades”.
