Antichrist Superstar

Antichrist Superstar

Marilyn Manson

“Antichrist Superstar” is the self-titled twelfth track on the Marilyn Manson’s second studio album, released in 1996. The song is composed of 27 rhythm guitar tracks and 5 lead guitar tracks.

The song is most famous for its live performances, which featured an ‘Antichrist’ podium and a desecration of The Bible, whilst the crowds repeatedly chants “Hey”.

Thematically, the song details the rise of Marilyn Manson as the ‘antichrist superstar’; his creation was a negative response to his Christian upbringing, which he believed to be hypocritical. The story of this semi-autobiographical character is further chronicled across the trilogy of albums, Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), which are collectively known as the ‘Triptych’. The story is told in reverse (in a similar way to how satanists read the bible backwards), with Antichrist Superstar, the first album released effectively being the end of the story/character arc.
