By utilizing a catchy, yet slightly dark-sounding backing track, Ghost discusses self-harming and suicide. This song is from the point of view of someone that’s given up on his life and decides to try to kill himself. He goes through several attempts, each time expressing his uncertainties about how he nearly died, before taking his own life.

The song was written by Badflower frontman Josh Katz to deal with his own suicidal ideation during an episode of severe depression. In a 2018 interview with Loudwire, he discussed the song’s inspiration and his songwriting process.

When it was written I had just gotten off tour, and I spent the entire tour having panic attacks on stage every night. It was just something that came out of nowhere for reasons that only my therapist can tell you. When that happened, I got home and it was a traumatic experience having to deal with that every single night and I was in a really low place. I was depressed and thinking about self-harm. So I just wrote it. I played out the whole scenario and put it into a song because that’s what writers do, I suppose.
