B-Side

B-Side

Downplay

“B-Side”, the eighth song on Downplay’s second album, “A Day Without Gravity”, is one of the better known songs on said album. The term “B-Side” itself refers to content from an album that should be seen as ‘Bonus content’, contrary to the “A-side” of a record which the artist and label intend to be the main hit of an album.

The song itself is about the emptiness after losing someone very close to you. In the case of this song this might either be because of a break-up, lack of contact or death. The most likely case is probably death, evident by the lyrics (“We’ll see you on the other side”), but it can be interpreted as any one of the above-mentioned.

The relation between the lyrics and the term “B-side” comes from the writer feeling that he now lives on the ‘B-side’ after losing a certain someone, so it’s used as a metaphor of feeling empty/down and he wishes he could go back to those days when they were still together and he was happy.
