Avril’s ballad song, “Birdie” is the second track from Avril’s 6th studio album, Head Above Water. The song revolves around the idea of being manipulated in a relationship. In a tweet, Avril revealed that the song was about a relationship where she felt like being locked up in a cage.

Avril, in an interview with EW, described that she had the concept for “Bridie” inside her head, for nearly two years, as she constantly felt being trapped. However, in the same interview, she added that it had nothing to do with her mental illness.
