Episode 1 of Netflix’s limited series Maniac.

The episode primarily serves to establish Owen’s (Jonah Hill) story arc as one of the two main characters on the show. We see his strained relationship with his family, particularly his brother Jed, and his struggle with paranoid schizophrenia, which manifests itself in the form of hallucinations.

The episode also introduces us to Annie (Emma Stone), the other main character, though her story arc is more thoroughly established in the second episode.
