Soundtrack 2 My Life

Soundtrack 2 My Life

Kid Cudi

A fairly self-explanatory title for the track: Kid Cudi delves into some of the problems he had growing up—the death of his father and subsequent sadness, loneliness, and depression.

Cudi’s musical autobiography in three straight rap verses, the song dwells on his life and his troubles, the issues nobody can see. He declares that he’s choosing to open up about his problems and to use his music to shed some light on his inner self.

At the time of this song’s release, very few rappers dove into deep personal matters or discussed issues like depression and anxiety in their music, and this record marks Cudi as an originator of what became known as emo rap.

The song is a fan favorite that quickly became an anthem for the kids who felt seen by Cudi’s music. There’s a generation which was assured that they weren’t the only ones struggling. Cudi’s iconic line about posing as a sacrifice “to show the kids they ain’t the only ones who up at night” rings true in many ways.

The second track off of Cudi’s influential debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day from 2009, “Soundtrack 2 My Life” is an introductory résumé of Scott Mescudi and sets the stage for what’s about to be unfolded. In an interview with HipHopDX, Cudi said:

“Soundtrack 2 My Life” is the perfect alley-oop for the whole album. It sets the flow. It kinda lets you know what we’re gonna be talking about. […] And the rest of the album, it takes it there, it kinda explains everything that’s mentioned in that [song].
