“Butterfly”–the eighth track of the While We Wait mixtape–explores the beginning of a new relationship and the process of opening up to one another. Kehlani yearns to uncover everything about her partner, body and soul. She compares her lover’s need to open up, to a butterfly undergoing metamorphosis and shedding its cocoon.

Interestingly, she collaborated with former teachers and students from the Oakland School for the Arts, which happens to be her alma mater. Returning to the academic side of her artistry contributed to the creation of a music video. The result included a dreamy, blue theme of Kehlani’s butterfly transformation, a contemporary choreography, and sparkly and bright body art; each component managed to mirror the song’s concept.
