“Low Key” Is the first solo single by the former Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke and features the American rapper Tyga. The song is about Ally noticing a guy checking her out and acting confident about it:

It’s about a guy trying to talk to me and noticing me and I recognize that. I appreciate that, but I’m like ‘low key, low key, you should really get to know me’. I’m a really confident woman. I’m standing on my own and kinda saying: ‘hey, I’m really cool and I’m awesome. So, do you want to get to know me?’. It’s a really strong and empowering message and, honestly, I just want whoever hears the record to feel that exact same way.

Meanwhile, Tyga entices a girl with jewellery whilst also referencing his comeback and reinvention.

Ally has been working on this song since March 2018. In an interview to Chica, she revealed that the initial plan was to record a totally different song, but it never worked out. Then her manager called her and played her this song, which had been initially written for a male voice:

But I was like: no, this is totally meant for a female and this is meant for me. So we ended up changing it. I actually pitched up the key like two keys higher, then put my voice on it, my energy, my character and I’m so happy with the way that it turned out.

After Ally adjusted the song, Atlantic Records executives suggested adding Tyga to the mix. Ally was totally down for it, having had worked with the rapper already on Fifth Harmony’s “Like Mariah”.
