This poem is about a girl (from the sea) who was very in love with a man (of the land) and tried everything to make him hers and for them to be together but nothing ever seemed to work (the fact that they are from different places might be a metaphor to the immigration of a young woman wanting to stay settled and well in a foreign country).

They ended up having a baby wondering if that could “anchor their spirits” but it only made their relationship worse, Walker left her to play in his band as soon as the child was born, making this “beautiful girl” a single mother who drowned in the responsibilities of her child and it’s necessities very quickly.
