Written by Mickey Stevenson and Sylvia Moy in 1965, Stevenson gave this song to then-wife Kim Weston to perform with Marvin Gaye, who was by that time one of the more established acts on the Tamla-Motown label. The original recording of “It Takes Two” hit the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as singles charts in Canada, Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
It would take another two (Rod Stewart and Tina Turner) to make “It Takes Two” a greater song than it originally was.
