My Love Is Waiting

My Love Is Waiting

Marvin Gaye

The final song Marvin Gaye ever recorded and the last on Midnight Love is a rush of rejuvenation at the thought of returning to the warm arms of an old lover.

Marvin had been living in Europe for two years and was torn between a return to the United States to promote “Sexual Healing” and staying in Europe where he was gradually recovering from the hectic lifestyle that brought him to the brink of his demise in years past. His mother’s bone cancer broke his hesitation and he decided to return home, making the song true to life. Having escaped tax issues, two failed marriages and the devastating toll his drug addiction was taking on him, Marvin recovered and released Midnight Love before coming home one final time.

“The last song on the album, which is the song I wrote, "My Love is Waiting,” I was amazed at it. The demo was like 93 percent to 94 percent done when I came to the studio with it. I wrote the song and Marvin sung it the same way it sounded on the demo. To this day, I still can’t believe it. It was like he could take a song and do whatever he wanted to it. “ – Gordon Banks on writing "My Love is Waiting” and Marvin recording it afterward.
