Applebite

Applebite

Soundgarden

The ninth song on Down on the Upside, “Applebite” introduces the psychedelic undertone that’s present for much of the second half of the album.

The title is likely a reference to the story of Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis. Funny enough, the Book of Genesis never specifies the forbidden fruit is an apple.

Adam and Eve resided in the Garden of Eden, a perfect place where they were oblivious to the concepts of death, decay, or violence (animals did die but Adam and Eve were immortal given they obeyed God). One day, Eve, upon incitement from the serpent (i.e. devil), ate the forbidden fruit from the tree of wisdom and gave some to her husband, Adam.

Their actions, the Original Sin, introduced sin to humanity along with the notions of good and evil and resulted in God casting them from the Garden forever.
