Eamon De Velera was a Prominent Irish politician. He was involved in the Irish civil war that preceded Irish independence in 1921, was instrumental in the drafting of the Irish constitution, served as Taoiseach (head of government) for many years before taking on more executive office as President of the Repulic.

He was a staunch Republican who had and inspired pride in being Irish, however has been criticised for his socially conservative views.

He is remembered for his eloquence, intellect and cunning. The Rubberbandits present a very different Eamon De Velera, a suave dangerous man who enjoys drugs and women. The mismatch between the public perception of the figure and the description of him serves as the conciet for this song. Whether this is Rubberbandits presenting a surreal alternative reality or making some sort of political commentary is difficult to say.
