As pointed out by sasha fergsn in a Russian translation of the song, “critical darling” is “a set phrase denoting the object of sympathy and flattering (at times unjustifiably) reviews by critics in the art, film, music and other industries. There is a play on meaning with the phrase ‘Darling, you’re so critical’”.
