50ft Queenie

PJ Harvey

The inclusion of “50 Foot Queenie” pairs nicely with Harvey’s other Rid of Me track “Man-Size,” as both tracks play either ends of the gender spectrum as screaming, foot-stomping identities that blur the lines of what constitutes power for each sex.

In the music video, Harvey confronts the camera in a leopard coat, red dress, sunglasses, and slicked back hair. “Polly, at that point, was developing her stage persona, this ‘PJ Harvey’ person,” said drummer Rob Ellis in Spin. “She started wearing feather boas and sunglasses onstage. It was a survival mechanism for her, a way of protecting her personal self from what was going on all around her.”

Harvey talks more about the song in this press video.
