In “Never Be Me,” Miley reflects on the expectations that her lovers hold against her, reminding them that she’ll never be the type of woman to fit into a specific mold.

First teased in a July 2019 interview with Elle Magazine, the track is one of the few which Miley had intended to release as part of her 2019 EP series. At the time, the track was titled “I Play With Fire” due to the line in the verse and was situated as the twelfth and penultimate track on the album.
