Blue Cheese

Blue Cheese

The UMC's

“Blue Cheese” was released as the first single from The UMC’s debut album Fruits of Nature in 1991. “Blue Cheese” was generally represented to mean “Wack MC’s” (Blue – sad, i.e. “I’m feeling blue” and Cheese – cheesy or corny)

In truth, it really had no meaning at all. The name was created while they were writing the song with one another over the phone. Kool Kim exclaimed to Haas that he heard most people had a 4th grade reading comprehension when listening to music. He said that the beat was so dope that they could call the song anything… like “Blue Cheese” and it would still bump.

The song was originally produced by RNS in its demo form, which was a much “harder” beat than the finished product. It was the harbinger of the “Wu-Tang” sound in its original form. However, once they went to the studio to cut it as a record, Haas co-produced the song with RNS and added the carnival sounding bridge along with additional drums layered on the track.

A common misconception about the song’s chorus is that many people think it says “Yap yap, I don’t know,” but in fact the actual chorus is “Get out, get out, I don’t love you!” as it was sampled from the Solomon Burke song “Get Out My Life, Woman”
