Animus

Animus

Swans

The final track from the first CD of the legendary double album “Soundtracks For The Blind”. Despite the sombre and dark mood that the album carries, the album ends up with the hopes of an entity to make the protagonist find a motive.

Animus can be defined in both ways. An “animating spirit” or a strong dislike. Here Michael Gira is stating that his ultimate motivation will be the one that he ends up hating the most. In this song, an unknown person is the motivation, which is especially prevalent in the fourth verse.

Animus was also described by the psychologist Carl Jung as “the deposit, as it were, of all woman’s ancestral experiences of man – and not only that, he is also a creative and procreative being, not in the sense of masculine creativity, but in the sense that he brings forth something we might call… the spermatic word.”
